National Headlines: Everyone is still honed in on the Michael Vick status, but thankfully something exciting happened in the baseball world today!
Mark Beuhrle, pitcher for the Chicago White Sox threw just the 18th perfect game in Major League Baseball history. This perfection was nearly shattered in the ninth inning, however, and only a leaping catch at the wall by Dwayne Wise saved the day. The White House was even tuned in to this event and Buehrle’s post game presser was cut short so he could field a phone call from none other than White Sox fan President Barack Obama.
Also of note on Thursday, the US Men’s soccer team advanced to the Gold Cup finals after a 2-0 victory over Honduras in Chicago. What a day to be a sports fan in the Chicago area!

National Headlines: Vick, Vick, Vick…. I am wearing of this story already and it has only been three days.
Local Headlines: The Texas Rangers completed their task at hand and SWEPT the Boston Red Sox in their series at the ballpark in Arlington. Not exactly what I – a Sox fan – expected to see this week!

National Headlines: Everyone is still on the Michael Vick watch, waiting to hear when he and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will sit down and discuss if Mr. Vick has any chance to be reinstated into the NFL. This story seems as if it will be discussed ad nauseum until there is some resolution.
Local Headlines: While the Red Sox are my baseball team of choice, the local MLB team that is followed (at least on some level) is the Texas Rangers, who have taken two-of-three from the Sox, including Tuesday evening’s 4-2 victory over Josh Beckett. This loss now drops the Red Sox one game behind the Yankees in the AL East division standings.

National Headlines: All the talk from far and wide is revolving around Michael Vick’s official release from custody. He missed two NFL seasons while serving time at the federal penetentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas after his much publicized and scrutinized dog fighting conviction in 2007. The commentators, writers and sports fans alike are polarized in their discussions about the ‘what ifs’ of if, when and where Mr. Vick will be suiting up to play quarterback in 2009 or beyond.
Local Headlines: While the World Cup of Softball doesn’t make a big headline splash across the nation, perhaps it should. The United States team, which has 10 rookies on the roster, dominated throughout the entire tournament. The ladies coasted to a 6-0 record in the World Cup, outscoring their opponents 51-4, including a 3-1 gold medal victory over Australia on Monday night in Oklahoma City.
