Oklahoma well represented in match play at U.S. Amateurs

Spectators to the Match Play rounds of the 109th U.S. Amateur golf tournament being held in Tulsa, Oklahoma will have some golfers with local connections to follow.  Seven players from the state made the cut to 64 and begin match play on Wednesday at Southern Hills Country Club.

All five of the entrants that play for Oklahoma State lasted to the next round, some of which made it by the skin of their teeth.  Of the five, Trent Whitekiller was the low golfer, carding rounds of 74 and 68 to sit at 2 over, just two strokes back from the stroke play winner, Tim Jackson.  Kevin Tway sits just one stroke back from Whitekiller in the stroke play results after two solid rounds of 72 and 71 to end at 3-over, 143.  Not far behind are the other three Oklahoma State golfers, with Morgan Hoffmann scoring a 146 with rounds 74 and 72, Peter Uihlien sitting at 147 with a 74 and 73, and standout Rickie Fowler just making the cut after an opening round of 71 was paired with a 6-over 76 on the second day of play to end with a 147.

Oklahoma State golfers aren’t the only Okie flair to make it to the match play competition.  Recent University of Tulsa graduate Nicolas Geyger from Chile, is tied with Tway after rounds of 71 and 72 for a 143.  Also, Carl Albert High School senior Talor Gooch rallied from an opening round 78 with a 1-under 69 to end up with a 147.

The first round pairings for these state players are as follows:
8:00 a.m. – Morgan Hoffmann vs. Charlie Holland
8:30 a.m. – James Sacheck vs. Peter Uihlein
9:20 a.m. – Nicolas Geyger vs. Derek Ernst

11:40 a.m. – Dan Woltman vs. Talor Gooch
