Introducing “Things of Awesomeness” - thoughts from my good friend Lanie James, a friend from college and beyond.  Her first blog post is reprinted here for your viewing pleasure as a fan’s take on the world of sports.  Ms. James is a fellow Oklahoma State alumae (which you will soon see from her perspective) and works for our beloved institution in the Career Services world.  To see all of Lanie’s thoughts of awesomeness, please visit http://thingsofawesomeness.wordpress.com/ or follow her on twitter @JLanie.

Vol. 1, Issue 1: Are you ready for some football?

It’s that time of year again and with it comes the AWESOMENESS of football season – specifically COLLEGE football season. (Don’t get me wrong, I watch the NFL but I adore the excitement of college football.) Already, I’m having trouble concentrating on anything other than fight songs and tailgating.

Naturally, I’m a die hard, “Cut me – do I not bleed orange?”, fanatic fan of my alma mater, Oklahoma State University.  My love for my university football team is seemingly boundless but it doesn’t keep me from watching just about any football game I can get my eyes on. (As I write this – I’m watching the Oregon v. Boise State game. Wow! That turf is really blue in HD.)

(Update: The fight between Oregon & Boise St. gets filed under NOT awesome.)

But what about fall and football makes it so awesome, you ask?

Well, if you are a college football fan – you probably have your own answer to that question.  I’ll tell you what I think it is – it’s being part of a collective that has the same goals and aspirations – teamwork, winning, making plays. Then you have the journey – the struggle, the hardwork, recovering from a loss, and persevering even when you win. (Yes, even when you win. In college football – winning = increased pressure and scrutiny. Hellooo microscope!)

Sometimes it’s just as simple as: Hot dog. Beer. Battle. Friends…and more Fight Songs.

Right now I sit with my fellow OSU Cowboy fans waiting anxiously on the eve of the biggest season opener in OSU football history- #9 OSU vs #13 Georgia on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 2:36pm.

FYI – OSU Alum & Pro Football Hall-of-Famer, Thurman Thomas will join national host Dan Patrick as part of the Nissan Heisman Trophy National Tour. AND….they’ll be signing autographs on Hall of Fame (north of BPS)before the game. The re-dedication of Boone Pickens Stadium (new screens are in!) will be at 12:20pm.

The entire state of Oklahoma sits impatiently today – mentally counting down the hours. Tulsa v. Tulane tonight at 7pm, OSU v. Georgia….OU v. BYU in Jimmy’s playground in Arlington. Who’s injured? How will it affect the team? Who’s tailgating? Everything is buzzing.

All the mayhem and controlled chaos of college football…. it’s another reason I love Oklahoma.

Why do you love college football?
